This quote necklace bears the words of Oscar Wilde: “With freedom, flowers, books, and the moon, who could not be perfectly happy?”

In 1895, Oscar Wilde was imprisoned for acts of gross indecency with other men because of his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas.
In 1897, he wrote a letter to his former lover. This letter never reached Lord Alfred. The prison took away each page as it was written, and it was only returned to Wilde on his release.
Lord Alfred claimed to have burned the copy that he received without reading it.
The letter was roughly eighty pages of hand-written text. It was first published in 1905, with the title De Profundis.
In the text of De Profundis, the following appears:
“If after I am free a friend of mine gave a feast, and did not invite me to it, I should not mind a bit. I can be perfectly happy by myself. With freedom, flowers, books, and the moon, who could not be perfectly happy?”
Wilde would spend the three years after his release in exile in France. These were also the last three years of his life.
This demonstrates that in suffering, Wilde believed that he had become a better person, able to take the kind of joy now in small things that he once had taken in feasts and decadence. The quote reminds us that troubled times can end in happiness.
